Google tightens Ads policy for government document providers

Google is tightening its Government documents and services policy, introducing stricter requirements for advertisers that promote government-issued documents and administrative services.

The changes, which take effect on October 5th, are designed to ensure only explicitly authorised providers can advertise these services through Google Ads.

What’s changing. Under the updated policy, advertisers will need to demonstrate that they have explicit government authorisation to provide the specific document or service they advertise.

To qualify, a provider’s domain must be linked from an official government website and clearly identified as an authorised provider for that document or service. Government-managed directories of approved partners and official regulatory portals will qualify, while business licences, commercial contracts, company registrations and government-hosted blog posts will not.

Google will also require authorised providers to advertise only the services covered by their authorisation and restrict ad targeting to the relevant geographic regions, except for inherently cross-border services such as electronic travel authorisations, border entry documents and U.S. Trusted Traveler programs.

Why we care. Advertisers operating in government services, visa assistance and administrative support may need to review their eligibility before the policy takes effect. Businesses that cannot demonstrate the required government authorisation could lose the ability to advertise these services on Google Ads.

The bigger picture. The update reflects Google’s continued effort to reduce misleading advertising in sensitive categories. By raising the certification threshold, Google is placing greater emphasis on official government recognition rather than general business credentials or commercial relationships.

Bottom line. Beginning October 5, Google will require stronger proof of government authorisation for advertisers promoting government documents and services, limiting eligibility to providers that are explicitly recognised by the relevant government authority.
